RESPONSIBILITIES:

Support General Counsel and Senior Counsel in providing legal advice as needed to department heads, officers, and staff employees of all support units of the bank, including Security, Information Technology, Marketing, Retail Banking, Retail Operations, Human Resources, Business Banking, Multi-Family/CRE and Facilities, review and negotiate various routine bank contracts, as directed, including the renewal of existing service contracts. Provide legal advice and support to branch network, including responding to branch inquiries regarding various topics such as powers of attorney, negotiable instruments, and entitlement to account funds.  Provide legal support to the lending division with ad hoc mortgage origination and servicing issues, including review of trust agreements and analyzing title issues. Provide legal advice to various Compliance Officers, including direction relating to subpoenas, restraining notices, and similar legal process, assistance in drafting disclosure statements, and ad hoc legal advice. Review marketing materials for compliance with all applicable laws, rules, and regulations. Participate in various inter-departmental committees to ensure compliance with all regulations, policies and procedures. Research facts underlying basis for small claims court actions through discussion with appropriate bank personnel and review of pertinent documents and coordinate appearance of employee witnesses at court proceedings.  Perform additional accountabilities as required.

 

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Admitted to practice law in New York and a minimum of 2-4 years’ experience preferred in a law firm or corporate law department
  • Working knowledge of the laws and regulations relating to the banking industry, as well as general business laws that affect relationships with customers and other third parties
  • A high degree of drafting and general writing skills, with an emphasis on contract drafting
